Vermont Long Trail: Long Trail Naturalist Project

Any hiker on the Vermont Long Trail is welcome to add their observations to this project! This project is part of the Long Trail Naturalists Project.

Project Goals:

More data: The data will allow for the collection of data from trails that are hundreds to thousands of miles long that experience hundreds to thousands of thru-hike attempts and millions of section-hike users.

Research: The data will then be available for use for research on wildlife corridors, wildfire recovery, heavy snow years and drought, trail use research, longitudinal studies and better planning for trail maintenance.

Education: Trail users will be able to learn more about the environments around them, can educate others and work to become even better stewards of the earth.

Advocacy: The data and patterns can provide foundation for advocacy materials for trails and public lands.

What makes this project unique?
-Focuses solely on long trails
-Collects data from an area including 3 miles on each side of the trail
-Asks for group size and weather with observations
-Agregates data across long trails
