The John Muir National Historic Site is home to over 100 native plant species and aims to provide a space for visitors to enjoy and observe a natural Californian habitat. To aid restoration efforts and keep track of the abundance, spread, and type of species available at the park, the Plants in John Muir National Historic Site Project is a citizen science Natural Resource Management program designed to recruit and engage volunteers in monitoring and maintaining the wildlife species through the use of specialized technology (primarily iNaturalist).
The project aims to teach volunteers fundamental environmental field skills such as plant species identification, GPS mapping, invasive species removal, scientific data collection and entry techniques, and making observations in nature. Other skills and knowledge learned from this program also include: plant biology, the mission and history of the National Park Service, professionalism, and public speaking. The program will help prepare volunteers for careers in environmental studies and conservation as well as provide an opportunity to learn how to work as a team, communicate in a professional setting, and explore nature.
