Wreck Pond is a 73 acre coastal pond located between the boundaries of Sea Girt and Spring Lake in Monmouth County, NJ. The lake serves as the eastern limit of the Wreck Pond Brook Watershed, which drains approximately 12.8 square miles (8,172 acres). Currently, Wreck Pond is connected to the Atlantic Ocean through an approximately 800 foot, 84” diameter pipe.
Recently, a network of partners (see below) has come together to complete a number of restoration projects within the pond. These projects including localized dredging, the creation of multiple living shorelines, and the construction of a box culvert that will serve as a secondary outfall to the Atlantic Ocean. These projects will improve water quality, reduce flooding, and improve fish passage, particularly for river herring and American eel (Anguilla rostrata). River herring is a collective term for two US National Marine Fisheries Species of Concern: alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) and blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis).
The American Littoral Society has created this iNaturalist project with the goal of documenting the total biodiversity in and around Wreck Pond. Those involved in this project will play a critical role in collecting data to help us better understand the ecology of Wreck Pond. We hope everyone participating in this project will have fun, learn about Wreck Pond, and gain an appreciation of this great ecological resource within the coastal community.
We would like to recognize all the partners involved in the projects aimed at restoring Wreck Pond. They include: the American Littoral Society, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, Monmouth County, the Borough of Spring Lake, the Borough of Sea Girt, Leon S. Avakian, Inc., and Najarian Associates, Inc.
