Join the San Francisco Department of the Environment and the California Academy of Sciences for a grassroots bioblitz on Yerba Buena Island! One of San Francisco’s ecological treasures, the island is home to an amazing diversity of naitve plants, birds, and more. We'll explore the beach and the upland areas, so come prepared to hike and get your feet wet.
A bioblitz is an intensive one-day study of biodiversity in a specific location. We’ll look for birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, butterflies, insects, spiders, trees, flowers, mushrooms, anything!
People of all ages and skill levels are welcome, but the terrain is a bit treacherous and may be difficult for children under 10! You bring your curiosity, a smart phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded (or digital camera), and tons of enthusiasm. We’ll rally some experts and folks who know the area. Together we’ll make some science!
The fun happens on Wednesday April 5th. We'll explore the island and the shore and document everything we can find for a few hours, then we'll all come back together to upload our observations, see what everyone else found, and get help with IDs.
