Taken 7.15 pm at The Groynes Christchurch. There was a pair of them.
This shining cuckoo was on the beach on driftwood. It was clearly identifiable as a shining cuckoo although not so clear in the photo. It was thought by some observers to be injured or possibly battered by the storm that morning, as it wasn't moving far. However it did fly away.
The roadrunner generally measures 18 to 22 inches in length and averages between 8–15 ounces in weight. These fast running creatures have been recorded at a speed of 20 miles/hour. The roadrunner is an opportunistic omnivore. Its diet mainly consists of insects, small reptiles, rodents and some fruits and seeds. The roadrunner will pretty much eat anything that it can catch. This one was in the process of foraging for a juicy grasshopper in which it latter devoured.
Preening on bench.
Heard my first shining cuckoo this afternoon.
Just heard one in the garden - first of the year.
Indian Cuckoo - I observed this bird fly to a branch with a large Limacodid moth caterpillar, catch it and beat it against its perch to break off its spines before swallowing it.
