A Virginia Rail at Fort Getty. For about 5 seconds it was right out in the open, but with my gloves on I couldn't get my lens cap off in time.
UFO field trip
I was photographing some sandpipers on the bank of the slough that bisects the Preserve when all of a sudden this Virginia Rail dashed out of the reeds and down to the water. It disappeared as quickly as it appeared. I believe it is a Virginia Rail because of its bright red bill and small size.
The Virginia Rail (Rallus limicola) is a small waterbird, of the family Rallidae.
