Awesome little Tiger Salamanders found during a rainy night in Southern Illinois. The pool was mainly filled with Spotted and Smallmouth Salamanders, but I managed to catch a few tigers with my dip-net.
At 9:30am this morning Staff removed the pole that blocks vehicles from driving up to the education center; in the cement base there was, as usual, water a few inches deep and in it NOT AS USUAL, was a little tiger salamander -- about 3 inches long swimming around. We worried about smashing it when we replaced the pole so we took it to the pond and released it there. Hopefully he survives his abrupt waking into wintery weather

The Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum) is a species of Mole Salamander. The proper common name is the Eastern Tiger Salamander, as to differentiate from other closely related species.
