There was an abundant number of Water Snakes of various sizes. Most were basking.
Approximately 18 to 24 inches long - very dark.
Found among cattails in open area along an intermittent stream.
Sighted near the trail head, this individual looks ready for its first spring shed!
Found at forest edge, in Lonicera bush
Water snake was basking on abandoned roadway near creek.
Two individuals nestled together in limestone/dolostone cobbles, just a few feet from the Huron shore of the Bruce Peninsula. Incredibly windy this day, and thus fairly cool. The wind was so loud that we almost couldn't hear each other speak out here at the shore, but conditions were apparently an aphrodesiac (or irritant, depending on what is actually going on here) for water snakes.
