Big Tree Trail
This bird has been visiting the backyard here for days. At one point it was picking small fruits off a wild tree and I did wonder if it had nestlings to feed as it kept going back and forth so many times across the yard.
It is a fairly large heavy bird, but it flies from one side of the yard to the other and lands in the trees, is rather shy, and no way am I going to be able to make a decent image of it using the iPod Touch!
However I can see what it is. These birds used to live mostly up the mountain (Nevis Peak) but now they are found sometimes down by the coast like this.
It is a large dark pigeon with a reddish nape and a long dark tail -- most of the body is slate grey. When the bird de-accelerates before landing, the tail spreads out to form a large wide fan-shaped surface.
We saw this species only a few times, and it never posed for a photo unlike all the other photogenic doves.
