Subspecies P. badius badius. These guys were going crazy with alarm calls because they were being hunted by chimps.
The Western Red Colobus is endangered throughout its range and the population around southern Senegal is isolated from the rest of the population around Côte d'Ivoire by a gap in Guinea. Apparently there were just a dozen in the Foret where we saw them.
The Western Red Colobus (Piliocolobus badius) is a species of Old World monkey found in West African forests from Senegal to Ghana. All other species of red colobuses have formerly been considered subspecies of P. badius. It is often hunted by the Common Chimpanzee. In 1994, Western Red Colobus monkeys infected many chimpanzees with Ebola virus when they were hunted/eaten by the same chimpanzees.
