Description

Árbol hasta de 20 m de alto, las ramas jóvenes y otras partes de la planta densamente tomentosas con pelos divididos de color café-rojizo, láminas obovadas, ápice obtuso o redondeado, borde entero o más o menos ondulado o dentado, venación pinnada evidente sobre todo en el envés, los nervios laterales se bifurcan cerca del borde, coriáceas, haz glabro o poco pubescente, envés cortamente lanoso-pubescente y las venas con pelos divididos de color café-rojizo; inflorescencias dispuestas en forma de fascículos de 3 a 8 racimos, con brácteas caedizas, pétalos obovados con el ápice eroso; cápsula tomentosa, trígono-globosa, endurecida, semillas numerosas, aladas, por lo general elípticas.

Clethra is a genus of between 30-70 species of flowering shrubs or small trees. It is one of two genera in the family Clethraceae (the other being Purdiaea). The species may be evergreen or deciduous, and all bear flowers in clusters or inflorescences.
