Just after dusk this bittern came out into the road and started booming as I was leaving the refuge! I managed one poor photo from the car before it flew into the plants.
Appears to be sleeping in a tree. There is swampy area nearby, but except for occasional disturbances, has remained still, eyes closed.
Saw two near each other.
The American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae.
