Spent 30 minutes trying to spot the bittern, which was within 40 meters of us. We could hear it clearly over the wind the boreal chorus frogs, blackbirds, bobolinks, song sparrows etc. I realize bitterns are elusive but it is always frustrating to be reminded of that.
The American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae.
