Spotted at one of the ponds at the Lewisville Aquatic Ecosystem Research Facility at Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area.
A stocky medium sized heron with thick striping. This bird is uses it camouflage of thick stripes to blend into reeds by standing with its neck and bill stretched upward. It often crouches and slips away through thick vegetation. This one was fishing in heavy vegetation in a pond at Brazos Bend State Park.
