Hericium abietis?

Couldn't get close enough to feel, but it was growing on a large downed CA bay.

Description from Wikipedia

Hericium abietis is an edible mushroom in the tooth fungus group. It grows on conifer stumps or logs, producing a cream white fruiting body up to 60 centimetres (24 in) tall and 40 centimetres (16 in) wide. It fruits from after the start of the fall rains to mid-season.
