Description

Seen in early leaf-out and budding stage along the riparian area. The height of this shrub was about 1.8 meters, and leaf lengths were eight to ten mm long.

Description

Small tree or tall shrub somewhat common in the foothills. Alternate compound leaves. Leaves rounded-tipped, rather thicker than berry leaves. Stems smooth, not prickly.

Cercocarpus betuloides, the birchleaf mountain mahogany, is a species of flowering plant in the rose family, Rosaceae. It typically grows in dry areas in the foothills and mountains of California, often in chaparral communities, and in other parts of the Southwestern United States and Baja California.
