Not sure if there's a way to tell if this is M. menidia or M. beryllina from these photos. Note to Dad: next time count the rays on the anal fin.

Fishing using sein net at mid-tide with students, caught approx. 70 1" to 3" silversides. I.D.ed using Peterson's Atlantic Coast Fishes.

Description

We collected the fish species, topsmelt silverside, in the former salt pond. The biologists from UC. Davis threw out nets and brought them onto the shore.

Description from Wikipedia

The neotropical silversides are a family Atherinopsidae of fish in the order Atheriniformes. The approximately 104 species in 13 genera are distributed throughout the tropical and temperate waters of the New World, including both marine and freshwater habitats. The familiar grunions and Atlantic silverside belong to this family.
