Male and female are normally in range of each other. If female is eating, the male can be seen observing on a branch nearby. Before nesting, the male would go to check out the feeders first, then call his mate to come in and feed.

It is found from southern Canada through the eastern United States from Maine to Texas and south through Mexico to northern Guatemala and Belize. It can also be found on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is found in woodlands, gardens, shrublands, and swamps.
