JCCC Bird Collision Study is permitted and ongoing since spring 2018. Bird collisions vary by year but are down by at least 50% across campus since remediation was put into place.
Based on patterns of bird strikes, quarter inch frosted dots and a decorative dot pattern spaced at 2" x 2" were installed on approximately 4000 sq. ft. of windows over 2019-2020. Treated and untreated windows continue to be monitored to determine effectiveness of dots which appear to be approx. 98% +-.
Monitoring continues to find new patterns of bird strikes on new and remodeled buildings, and tree planting and removal across campus. Small spot remediations are still being done, and as of 2025 6500 sq ft. have been remediated. Bird carcasses go to the KU Center for Biodiversity, live injured birds go to Operation Wildlife in Linwood KS for rehab. less ↑
