Malta Biodiversity of Fungi (Malta BioFun) is a citizen‑science initiative designed to collect field observations of wild fungi (macrofungi) occurring across the Maltese Islands. In contrast to plants, insects, birds, and other faunal groups, wild fungi remain severely under‑recorded in Malta, with only a handful of specialists currently studying them. To bridge this knowledge gap, the project encourages broader participation in fungal documentation. Contributions may range from rapid “snap‑and‑go” observations—photographing encountered fungi and submitting records to the Malta BioFun group on iNaturalist—to more dedicated efforts involving specimen collection and preparation. Each observation, regardless of approach, strengthens the national dataset and advances understanding of Malta’s fungal biodiversity. less ↑
