Onslow College occupies a site in Wellington's north-western suburbs, near the base of Mount Kaukau, which is the most visible high point in the Wellington landscape and is part of Wellington's extensive Outer Green Belt. In recent years staff and students have restored native plants to part of the school, in the catchment of the tiny Waipahihi Stream. Planting and weeding continue in the area. Each year students in Year 9 study the ecological community, particularly invertebrates, within the restoration area as part of their Science curriculum. The primary purpose of the Onslow College Nature Watch Project is to provide an ongoing database of the most interesting nature discoveries students make in the restoration area and to share these findings with an international community of naturalists.
