How to tell males from females

On the iNaturalist forum, I recently came across an older 'feature request' to allow the iNat Computer Vision to suggest annotations, such as for males or females. As part of that discussion it was pointed out that the model would need observations already annotated for training purposes. Hence, in the...

Eristalinus (Eristalodes) barclayi & E. (E. ) quinquelineatus - the lesser known Stripe-eyed Lagoon Flies

According to recent studies assembling the mitogenomes of Afrotropical species of Eristalinus, E. barclayi, E. quinquelineatus and E. fuscicornis form a species complex. „These results either question the taxonomic value of the morphological characters used to distinguish the three species, or illustrates a recent divergence, ongoing speciation, hybridization, or introgression.“ (Gontran Sonet, Yannick De Smet, Min Tang, Massimiliano Virgilio, Andrew Donovan Young, Je...

UVM Ornithology Field Journal 7

Date: April 29, 2024
Time: 2:00-3:00pm
Location: Williston, Vermont
Weather: 57 degrees Fahrenheit, party sunny, minimal winds
Habitat: Shrubbery off the side of a main road, against the fence of a dog kennel

The identification phase begins...and there's still time to upload observations from April 26-29!

Hi all, thanks again for your wonderful contributions to our City Nature Challenge project. I didn't realize it last night, but it looks like the CNC organizers are still allowing observations made between April 26 and 29 to be uploaded - our species tally is now at just under 900!!

We know that some of you still have observations to upload, so this is good news. Please just make sure to follow the honor system and only upload photos taken during the official ob...

We did it!

Well, mostly you all did it!

I am beyond pleased with how our City Nature Challenge turned out. Pending any uploads still being processed, here are our stats:

6,620 observations
1,374 species
253 observers

That is simply amazing for our first attempt at this. You all have contributed so much valuable information to the iNaturalist database, and for that you all deserve to be commended. There are two people, however, who deserve a little extra commendation....

Bat monitoring 2024

I've been monitoring bats year round since January 1st 2018 which has involved analysing over 90,000 sound recordings to date.

The survey method used involves siting a bat detector at a fixed location; then recording all bat calls from 30 minutes before sunset to 3 hours after.
Recordings are manually analysed using Wildlife Acoustics Kaleidoscope software. Where necessary recordings have been double checked by other experts (

Walsh Ranch BioBlitz Surprising Find!

Twelve naturalists logged 910 observations of more than 430 species at the Walsh Ranch pocket prairie and surrounding natural area during the 2024 City Nature Challenge. One of the observations was of the Five-Spotted Bogus Yucca Moth, Prodoxus quinquepunctella. This observation is the only record of this elusive species from the entire DFW City Nature Challenge and only the 4th Research Grade observation ever made in North Texas. Look online to find out why this little moth is so spe...

We want to hear about your experience!

Thank you for joining us for the City Nature Challenge and InsectBlitz! at EarthFest. It was a great day of science and fun!

The American Museum of Natural History is experimenting with community projects, such as bioblitzes, and we would really appreciate hearing your thoughts about the experience. We created a survey to gather your thoughts. It should take no more than 5 minutes to complete and we hope you all will.

Feel free to leave comments on this journal post with...

American Ladies Have Big Eyes

We're awash in American Lady/Vanessa virginiensis butterflies here on the New York City end of Long Island. Is it the same elsewhere in the region? This afternoon, walking ten blocks down 4th Avenue and returning on 5th Avenue, two stretches of hardscape barely relieved by minor street trees in otherwise lifeless tree pits, I saw four of them flit-speeding along low to the concrete. Yesterday at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, I saw a bunch and managed to photo a trio of them. On April 15, ...

Golden Currant

The Golden Currant (Ribes aureum) is popping right now in the garden, which is a sure sign that spring has arrived! Golden Currant bushes produce a tart, edible berry that is often made into jellies today, and were used as food and medicine by many tribes across Idaho. Birds and other pollinators love these drought tolerant bushes, and so do we!

Rosy Pussytoes

Rosy Pussytoes (Antennaria Rosea) are part of the daisy family and are found throughout North America. Most plants are female and reproduce by cloning itself. They flower in late spring and grow low to the ground. Ours often gets overlooked because it’s a ground cover and sometimes gets covered by our Wine cup that’s a bit out of control in this spot.

City Nature Challenge Identification Period

We are now in the identification period of the City Nature Challenge, which means:

  • You have additional time to finish uploading the many pictures and sounds you recorded over the weekend. (All photos and sounds must have been recorded between Friday, April 26 and Monday, April 29.)
  • It’s time to identify observations! We need as many people as possible to help identify the more than 19,041 observations that have already been submitted.

We firmly belie...

Distinguishing Magicicada Species

The 2024 Magicicada emergence will comprise of three species of 17-year cicada in the forest preserves. Though the nymphs are rather indistinguishable, the adults may be identified down to species.

Differences in visual appearances are subtle. Pharaoh Cicada has orange and black stripes on its abdomen while Cassin's Cicada has a nearly all-black abdomen (but may show slight orange edging on the abdomen sections). Cassin's Cicada is smaller than the Pharoah Cicada. Decula is abou...

May Events

Hello everyone,

Happy end-of-April and start of May. 🌻 🌿 🌱Along with the appearance of some wildflowers (keep an eye out for Prairie Crocus), May brings our first plant walk of the summer!

Our first walk will be this Saturday, May 4th from 1:00- 2:30pm at the Nature Reserve in Indian Battle Park, Lethbridge. We will be uploading photos of plants to iNaturalist, looking for Purple Geranium, and learning about the traditional uses of native plants. We are registered as par...

Tartarus Cave - Dark Zone

Trip Date: 2024-04-20

Bobby's Grotto

On the way to Bobby's Grotto, I walked across the burnt area. There is a boulder filled depression that needs further investigation. Water disappears through the sand into a boulder choke.

Someone has left a bundle of clothes in the cave, and probably sleep there. There was much less life than I expected.

Tartarus

In the debris, in the twilight zone, near the cave entrance, the centipede, and Cr...

A laboratory study of crosses of captive fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster)

A laboratory study of crosses of captive fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster)

There are ca.1,500 species of Drosophila sp. which are found in multiple habitats. The fly originated in tropical West Africa and breeds in a variety of rotting fruits. They are saprophytic, feeding and ovipositing in rotting plant, and, sometimes, animal matter. They are holometabolous, undergo metamorphosis and are ideally housed in a laboratory at 18-25°C. Stocks of infrequently used strains are oft...

Riistakameroita on maastossa kuusi kappaletta. Laitoin yhden kuvaamaan paikkaa, jossa ilves kävi t...
