Small clump of leaves, maybe six to eight inches across with stalk about 4 to 5 feet tall. Scattered across several acres in sandy soil.
Single isolated individual out in the middle of a grazing pasture. ID provided by Andrew Salywon at Desert Botanical Gardens.
Found several acres of these purplish flowers on plants standing 3-4 feet tall. Was really surprised by it. Took photos and GPSd it so I could tell others about it.
First observation of this. Had no idea what it was. But, I liked it. 3 to 4 inch round object that looked like all the petals had fallen off. It was sitting up on a stalk about 18 inches off the ground, if memory serves me correctly.
