Description
With Dave Goodwin and Erik Haney, plus 4 others; an unsuccessful search for the Yellow-headed Caracara. We arrived in the dark and stayed for 3.5 hours. The weather at the start was clear (pre-sunrise), 70 degrees ("feels like" 71), and breezy. We spread out, with Dave at the "bait shop," Erik just south of the Bill Bird Marina building, and me ranging from a bit farther north to 0.4 miles farther north (across a large grassy area to the next parking lot north). None of us saw any sign of the caracara. I slowly walked my way back south, along the west shoreline; by the time I met up with Dave and Erik, the 4 others had headed home. Dave had Easter plans with family, so he too left. Erik and I left Haulover Park at 1002 and drove around the FIU Biscayne campus to the west for 33 minutes.
I recorded 20 bird species while in the park; the best bird was the Gray Kingbird that I repeatedly heard (and audio-recorded) but never saw. It was roosting in one of the Coconut Palms north of the Bill Bird Marina building, and it must have left without me seeing it fly away, as I never heard it again.
