While participating in a fishing derby in Haverstraw Bay, using Atlantic Silversides for bait and fishing from the eastern shore of the Hudson River, we were amazed that a turtle took our bait off the bottom. We have only occasionally seen snapping turtles in this part of the river and all in attendance reported this to be a unique experience. Thankfully the turtle released the bait as soon as it saw the landing net. We were especially surprised since the salinity of the water was low.
