I went back today to check on my old friend from last year, the solitary Checker Lily, standing its ground on the cliff of this tiny urban hillside park. Couldn't find it at first and started getting anxious. But then - voila - there it was, one Fritillaria affinis, growing wild, all by its lonesome ... a solitary survivor, sporting four flowers.
I am deeply grateful for such a little treasure persisting against all odds in such an unlikely spot.

Being used by a San Francisco Garter Snake as a pillow. There was no predation occurring here. The snake never acted aggressively towards the lizard. They just slept like this until the lizard wandered off.
