Description

Reviewing early photos (2009 and attached as photos 9 & 10) I realized that this is a Tall Rattlesnake Root after flowering.

Flowers, ½" long, pinkish, bell-shaped, nodding, pappus pale brown or buff.

2' to 6' high. Upland woods, borders. Late spring to fall.

Observation when seen last year: Multiform (entire, divided & deeply lobed) winged leaves (see photos) on vertical stem about 24-30" h. with milky sap.
Appears primitive. Upper leaves are entire or nearly so; lower are deeply lobed and highly variable.

Clusters of 1mm-1cm x 1mm capsules at plant apex and at leaf nodes becoming filled with v. fine "hairs" (pappus).
