The vermillion sea star (Mediaster aequalis) is a small sea star, up to 20 cm (8 in) across. Five well-defined arms. Vermilion red and covered with tightly packed flat-topped plates bearing tiny granules. Found from the intertidal zone to 500m depth, most often seen at very low tides (usually negative tides). Found along the west coast of North America, ranging from Alaska to California. Omnivorous
