The leather star (Dermasterias imbricata) is a fairly small sea star, growing up to 30 cm (12 in) across. 5 (rarely 6) broad arms with a slippery smooth surface and a distinctive odour likened to garlic. Reddish brown with grey-green colour at the margins. Ranges from central Alaska to north Mexico. Found from the intertidal zone to 91 m depth. Preys on sea anemones.
