NB DO NOT CONFUSE WITH OCHRE STAR. The mottled star (Evasterias troschelii) is a large sea star, growing up to 60 cm (24 in) across. 5 long and tapering arms (thinner and longer than ochre star). Variable colour, with mottled green, brown, grey, orange and red forms and white spines (spines smaller than ochre star). Rough upper (aboral) surface. Siberia, north Alaska to central California. Intertidal to 75 m depth, often replaces ochre star in more brackish waters. Predatory, diet includes bivalves and snails.
