Fowler's toad (Anaxyrus fowleri, formerly Bufo fowleri ) is a species of toad in the family Bufonidae. The species is native to North America, where it occurs in much of the eastern United States and parts of adjacent Canada. It was previously considered a subspecies of Woodhouse's toad (Anaxyrus woodhousii, formerly Bufo woodhousii ).

Description: brownish and grayish color with a light stripe down the middle of the back. Distinguished from the American toad by at least 3 warts within a dark spot on the back. Measure 2-3 in head to behind.

Seen in park: at lowlands (usually below 3000 ft). Seen in fields including Cades Cove, Big cove, Big Spring Cove, and by Cataloochee Creek. Also, likely to occur at ends of all creeks flowing into Fontana Lake.

Habitat: forested areas and woodland boarders by temporary or permanent shallow water. Usually found on land at night. They prefer humid weather.

Status: widely distributed

Sound 5

Voice: Plaintive, descending, 1- to 4-second "wraaaaaah.” Brash and nasal in quality.

Produced through a single vocal sac.
