For now, I just want to provide direction to coralsoftheworld.com, which is by far the best pre-existing resource for coral identification and does not need to be duplicated here. I generally use it through the 'coral geographic' section, by selecting the portion of the map with the hand icon where I spotted the coral, clicking 'apply', and then 'taxon results', and then scrolling through the photos of the coral species listed as occurring in that region.
In time I can add my own insight to this guide.
