Description

Here's a boy: check out those antennae! This is actually an reduced file from my brother David Hibbard's work. He take pix with enormous detail: his files can't be reasonably transmitted without compression. But just the thing if you want to photograph lepidopteran... Compare with my pitiful blackberry snap of the girl.

Description

A female polyphemous, one of the three silkmoths species we might see in our area; and in my experience the most common. I used to get cocoons from birch trees in the older Rohnert Park neighborhoods and adjacent Cotati when I worked in RP. For some reason, I've never seen cocoons in Santa Rosa, where I live and know very well. I've also looked in Petaluma and a bit in Sebastopol without result. like most of their beautiful but evanescent tribe, even old er citizens are amazed to see one and think it an exotic. I kept her one night to see if a suitor would come; sadly nobody showed.
