We saw a large population of these plants on a south facing slope with only a few flowers present.
I found this on the roadside right next to where we parked the car. I really don't know what it is.
I think it may be a quail. I saw it on a trail at the Wilder Ranch, Santa Cruz, CA. It was walking together with its mate and then disappeared into the tall grass as I approached.
I saw a lot of these while I was hiking. Just wondering what it is called.
This one had its front legs growing in as well.
