I finally was able to take a photo of a Fernbird but the camera setup was way out, hence the over exposure.
@Clinton is this the northern or standard Kahawai?
These vertical scratch marks are on two mahoe away from the track edge so much less likely to be people. Climbing possum? Suburban reserve.

On streambank, providing the canopy here of the stream and streamside native vegetation. adjacent canopy is kanuka (rawirinui) and mahoe, with a large tanekaha about 10m downstream of this tree privet.
