What

Menzies' Tree Moss (Leucolepis acanthoneura)

Observer

mossy

Date

January 10, 2012

Description

I was looking for a specific moss while walking back to class and I found this instead.

A dioecious moss with a dendroid growth habit, observed on the walkway to Parking Lot "B" at The Evergreen State College on a rainy day.

This moss has both antheridia and sphorophytes on the same plant. The sphorophytes are shorter than that gametophytes and I'm not sure why. Perhaps these are very young sphorophytes. You can see a green "ball" in the sphorophyte; I wonder if that is an egg or a zygote? In other words, has it been fertilized yet?

What confuses me is that the sporophytes seem to be coming from the ground rather than from the top of a stem.

These are high resolution images so be sure to click on them and view them in the "original" sizes
