Near Arch Hall on UW Campus
Tsuga heterophylla: Western Hemlock, growing in my backyard. I am not quite sure if it was planted there or if the property was developed around it.
W. Bleeding heart in my back yard.
Found on the trail behind Hagget going towards U-Village.
Identified using "Flora of the Pacific Northwest" by Hitchcock and Cronquist.
Very difficult to identify, I stumbled onto Saxifragaceae while trying to see what Crassulaceae looked like and noticed a similarity in the flower structures, then I went through the section and found the correct species.
One of the dominant species in these lowland Puget Sound forests, but in a working treefarm, they are only found in the protected areas near wetlands, because the rest is planted with Douglas fir.
-pointy, conical buds are visable
-many cones underneath
-rivals the Thuja plicata as the biggest tree in the neighborhood
-needles in fascicles of 2
-short, thick needles
