Humpbacked in appearance similar to that of a camel, flightless – because unlike other cricket species they are wingless – brownish, nocturnal (active at night, hide during the day, but I found this female one in a compost bucket: it had hopped in couldn't get out), and widespread in the world, they do not possess sound-producing organs, and therefore do not chirp; using their long limbs, camel crickets leap when frightened, their only defense mechanism
On an old white oak in my front lawn.
