In temperate rain forest associated with old growth large conifers. Palmately lobed leaves 10 cm across and therefore much smaller than the big leaf maple also found in this forest. Leaves are brilliant green with lighter underside, but turning yellow in this fall time. No samara present at this time. Slender branches.

Acer macrophyllum leaf has 5 deeply lobed palmate lobes with opposite leaves. The fruit is called a Samara. Often, as you can see in the picture, the trunk will be covered in moss and licorice fern. It is an angiosperm and its leaves turn yellow and fall off the tree in the fall
small to medium sized, with heavy branches. young bark smooth, older bark dark brownish red and peeling. Leaves are alternate, oval to 15 cm long. Dark shiny leaves above, whitish green below. Flowers and berries in vase shaped hanging clusters

Polypodium glycyrrhiza found on the path to the parking lot near the organic farm trail. This fern is often found growing on trunks and branches of trees but can also be found on wet mossy humus. Licorice fern gets its name from its licorice flavored rhizome which has historically had many culinary and medicinal uses. Variable colors of sori (spore cases) can be found on the underside of the fronds.
