Growing on forest floor in duff substrate near trail. Dendroid, shoots radially symmetric. Stem leaves whitish, scale like, contrasting with the dark reddish brown to black stems.
Found growing on brick mortar on exterior of greenhouse bricks. Twisted peristome, smooth awn. Leaves awned, 1.5-3mm long. This species is common on concrete and mortar. Here there was greenhouse white wash painted over and growth seemed unimpeded.
Growing on hardwood branch adjacent to stream. Leaves broadly ovate, costa double, plants stiff, leaves 0.8-1.8 mm, leaf margins serrulate at tips. The back side of leaves rough with large papillae by projecting cell ends.
Growing on deciduous tree branch next to creek. Leaf apex more gradually tapered, wavy, sometimes recurved but seldom abruptly reflexed; leaves more broadly spaced, revealing an orangish stem. Leaves with supplementary costae.
Growing on trunk of Pseudotsuga menziesii. Leaves distichous, no costa= Hepaticae. Leaves not divided, not ciliate, oil bodies 2+ or unknown, bilobed, small dorsal lobe, lobes obtuse to round, leaves round or oblong. 2 teeth widely spaced on dorsal lobe.
Growing on wet soil at edge of trail head parking lot. Leaves with sharply differentiated border of elongated cells. Leaves broad, leaf margins toothed, not double toothed, leaf cells as long as wide, leaves strongly decurrent, leaf cells near costa isodiametric, leaves usually 5-7mm, median leaf cell walls thick and distinctly thickened at the corners. Widespread and common on wet soil.
