I saw what I think is a turkey vulture on campus up by Werth. These birds always remind me of lizards with their scaly little heads, so it makes sense to me how they could be dinosaurs.

Description

A hermit thrush flew into the window of my friend's dorm at Watson Hall. We went down to ensure that the bird was okay and luckily they flew away minutes after taking this picture. When they stretched their wings, I guessed that this bird would fly instead of glide due to their short, broader wings. When they took off, their flapping confirmed my suspicion.

Description

Saw this small bird in the forest near Mansfield Hollow Lake. It was quickly flying up trees, possibly foraging for food. I believe it is a golden-crowned kinglet. In regards to taxonomy, it was given this name because of its yellow crest, which sort of looks like a crown.

I observed this American Kestrel that I believe to be a male based on the color of its plumage soaring in the high winds of the open field environment of Horse Barn Hill. He momentarily perched in the tree until he flew off in search for food. Something interesting that I observed about the Kestrel was that while in the fast wind he was able to float in place all while keeping his head perfectly still.

I’m not sure the species name but I’m highly confident this was a woodpecker of some sort. I took a long video of them and they continued pecking up and down the tree for some time. I can only assume they’re looking for food. The picture is quite blurry but I did notice red coloration on the the head. If I had to guess I would say they were either a Downy Woodpecker or Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker.

I saw this red-shouldered hawk (?) outside the Science 1 building on a telephone pole. It had a very orange breast with some faint white striping. It was rotating its head around presumably to watch its surroundings/scan for prey. Can a hawk rotate it’s head like an owl can?

Bad picture quality, but pileated woodpecker taking large wood chips out of a white pine near my house a ways off campus. Taking large chips out of the tree, but the tree was alive, and it is very early in the year, so I'm not sure it was nesting. I did have a good view and could note the large red crest, black back, and clear woodpecker behaviour and position on the tree.
