Description

Mature leaves are broadly oval with distinct petioles. The leaves are also strongly mottled. Flowers are sessile to stem and are dark red to maroon in color with three petals. The sepals are strongly curved downward.

Description

Distinguishing features of this species are crenate leaf margins and fruiting pedicels that are 2–8 mm long. Leaves are obovate, simple, alternating, deciduous, and grow to 2.5-7.5 cm long.Drupe fruits are red, shiny, and globose. The pulp is bitter; they contain 3-5 seeds and mature in autumn. Bark is light brown to gray in color and may be smooth or warty and roughened.

Description

Leaves are alternate and odd pinnately compound Leaflets are entire and elliptic with pinnate venation. The flowers are white and very showy and fragrant. Fruit is a legume that is three to six inches long. Thorns are present on trunk and branches.

Description

The black willow is a large willow, attaining a height of 75 feet and a diameter of 2 feet or more. It has as irregular, open crown and frequently a cluster of main trunks.The leaves are alternate, simple, and taper pointed, with long, sharp curved tips and finely toothed margins. There are prominent leaflike stipules at the base of the leaf stem. The buds are reddish brown.The fruit is a catkin of small, light reddish brown capsules, 1/8 inch long, with tufted seeds. On young branches the bark is yellowish to reddish brown. On larger stems and trunks it is almost black, broadly ridged and shaggy or scaly.

Description

Large tree approx. 40 feet tall. Bark with numerous small ridges and grooves. Some of the ridges form "diamond shapes." Leaves pinnately compound leaves with mostly 9 leaflets. Brown terminal bud. Pubescent on rachis and underside of leaflets. Fruit a brown husked nut.
