Description

Butterfly was attracted to a spring coming out of a cliff along side of the road.

California Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis californica) is a medium-sized butterfly in the Brush-footed Butterflies (Nymphalidae) family with a wingspan of 1.75-2.25 inches. Overwintering adults can be seen January-May. They have migratory flights May-June where great numbers can be seen at once. Adults overwinter in low elevation coastal canyons. Larval food plant where adult lays the eggs is Ceanothus. Favorite adult nectar plant is California Buckeye. They are also seen on fruit and scat. They are avid puddlers, where they sip minerals from moist sand or mud.

BUTTERFLY and CATERPILLAR (Annotated References):

In California, there are about 240 species of butterflies. There are more than 3,000 species of MOTHS, which represent 4 suborders in about 50 families. Butterflies have clubbed antennae, moths do not. Many moths are nocturnal, but not all.
