This species of plant contains modified leaves called spines. This is where the carry out photosynthesis. The rounded green structures are the stem. They are enlarged compared to other plants because they are adapted to store water. In addition this species contain Areoles which appear as hair like extensions that form the spines and the flowers of the cactus.

I'm tossing up some late-December, year-end records, mostly around the house.
My grandpa calls it a "terrapin". About 6 inches in length. About 4 inches tall. Very shy. We live around a pond and some bamboo which it was found near.
