I have a degree in Geology, working in Seismology, and have been hiking and botanizing for over a decade, primarily in southern California. I also have a native plant garden at my home and start many of my plants from seed. In 2014, I reached my goal of having 100 native California species bloom in my home garden; more than half were annuals!
