Caimito is a small community belonging to the parish of Quingue, in the province of Esmeraldas in northwest Ecuador. Our community is located in one of the most biodiverse and ecologically privileged places in the world. It is one of the last remnants of Tropical Rainforest (Chocó) on the coast of Ecuador. It is located near the Mache Chindul Ecological Reserve and is part of the Galera-San Francisco Marine Reserve, the first marine reserve established along the continental coast of Ecuador.

There are 15 families that live in Caimito that work, mainly, in the cultivation of cacao, banana, papaya and other tropical fruits. Many of the families of this community, aware of the uniqueness of their habitat, are learning the importance of taking care of this special ecosystem through sustainable and environmentally friendly forms of subsistence. Thus, we have established a Volunteer Permaculture Program for those interested in learning about and participating in sustainable agriculture, eco-construction, and environmental conservation.

Caimito es una pequeña comunidad perteneciente a la parroquia de Quingue, en la provincia de Esmeraldas. Caimito se caracteriza por estar localizado en uno de los puntos más biodiversos y privilegiados del planeta. Se encuentra en los últimos remanentes de Bosque Húmedo Tropical (Chocó) en la costa de Ecuador, cerca de la Reserva Ecológica Mache-Chindul y en el área de influencia de la Reserva Marina Galera-San Francisco, la primera reserva marina del Ecuador continental.

Actualmente, en Caimito viven 15 familias las cuales trabajan, principalmente, en agricultura destacando el cultivo del cacao, banano, papaya y otras frutas tropicales. Muchas familias de esta comunidad, conscientes del carácter único de su hábitat, están aprendiendo la importancia de cuidar del ecosistema mediante formas de subsistencia sostenibles y amigables con el entorno. Por eso, formamos el programa Permacultura Caimito, en lo cual voluntarios pueden aprender y participar en la producción agrícola sostenible, eco-construcción, y conservación ambiental.
