I retired from academia at the end of 2007. I have a keen interest in biodiversity, and am busy revegatating parts of my 33 acres in Central Otago. The property hosts a saline patch, adjacent to DOC's Chapman Road Scientific Reserve. This area hosts Lepidium kirkii, Atriplex buchananii, and Chenopodium ambiguum in addition to the spring annuals Myosotis brevis, Ceratocephala pungens and Myosurus minimus ssp novae-zelandiae.

With the support of DOC I have established a community native plant nursery, with the objective of planting ecosourced natives in appropriate areas such as river banks and reserves.
