Description

Monadenia infumata callidina Berry, 1940

43 mm

Found near Patrick's Point, Humboldt Co., CA. Snails were active on the grass just off the highway.

A variable species and this colony exhibits several variations of banding as well as melanistic individuals. Some individuals are dark colored on the ventral side, othered are light colored on the bottom and some have varying degrees of both dark and light ventral colors.

The species resembles a very large flat M. fidelis (which it used to be assigned to) but is considered a sub-species of M. infumata now. I would suggest that most of the M. fidelis observations from coastal Humboldt County are actually this sub-species of M. infumata but it's hard to ascertain for sure based only on photos of the snails from just one camera angle.
