Date

June 1983

Description

Photo scanned from my color slide. Frog collected at Bottomless Lakes State Park, Chaves Co., NM, June 1983 (no specific date recorded), by J. Applegarth. This species is found in desert habitat with gypsum soils and/or limestone rock. Tadpoles of this species metamorphose within the egg (which is layed underground in burrows, crevices, etc.) and so there is no aquatic stage in the life cycle. The call of a male, usually made at the mouth of a burrow or other opening at night after summer rains, sounds much like a dog barking down inside a well. (Note the limestone rock with crinoid fossils in this posed photo.)
