This individual was found newly emerged along the bank of the south fork of the Trinity River (elevation 1235 ft). The large blade-like mouthparts for drawing blood are clearly visible. The pupa was also photographed. Identification made using the information in Middlekauff and Lane's(1980) guide to the Tabanidae of California.
