This bee fly was found in the arid sage-covered hills above Bannack, Montana. I originally considered it to be H. eumenes, but according to expert Joel Kits;

"H. moriodes has white edges on the mesonotum like H. eumenes, but the dark area in the wing doesn't extend past crossvein r-m in eumenes as it does here."
