What

Eastern Scissors Grinder Cicada (Neotibicen winnemanna)

Observer

billreynolds

Date

September 5, 2009

Description

Tibicen winnemanna (aberration) - Tibicen winnemanna -
Garner, Wake County, North Carolina, USA
Collected at the intersection of NC 50 & Hwy 70.
September 5, 2009

This cicada is a very interesting case (Amelanistic, Albinistic, Leucistic,...an ABERRATION!)

Although he appears "teneral", he is in fact fully sclerotized, pruinose and functionally an adult. Strangely, he is lacking most of the dark pigmentation. This cicada was collected approximately 20 feet up in the trees while calling (~7:00 pm EDT)!
NOTE: Pruinosity (white wax - a trait of sclerotized adults, not tenerals!)

Comparison of "aberrant" cicada with "normally pigmented" individual.
